Isn’t December a beautiful month?

Christmas decoration and Christmas present.

The winter or Christmas break is approaching—a time to meet with family and friends, enjoy celebration dinners, and participate in end-of-year traditions. It is a time for slowing down and cherishing life’s special moments.

That was Scenario 1.

Now, let me ask again: isn’t December also hectic and stressful month?

The last stretch of the year often feels like a race—finalizing projects, closing budgets, meeting targets, and attending endless celebrations, dinners, and gatherings. You find yourself checking gift lists, wondering how to make everyone happy, and juggling it all.

That was Scenario 2.

Which of these scenarios do you experience most often in December?

This week, I facilitated a workshop on managing pre-Christmas stress at the VrouwenBuurtLab Culture Center. We explored strategies for taking meaningful short-term and long-term breaks to recharge our energy.

Here’s the truth: stress is inevitable. But recognizing when you need a break—and giving yourself permission to take it—is essential for staying balanced. Even small breaks, like a two- or five-minute pause, can make a big difference in managing deadlines, projects, or a busy day.

The key? Take a break without guilt.

Break + Rest = Energized, Uplifted You

What’s your favourite type of break during a long workday?

Do you pause differently when working from home versus the office?

Here’s mine: a short walk, listening to birdsong, or a quick tea break. These little moments keep me grounded and refreshed, especially during hectic months.

As a gift, I’d like to share 10 ideas for a clamer, more enjoyable December:

1. Share responsibilities with colleagues.
2. Set a realistic schedule to avoid overcommitment.
3. Plan breaks for yourself and your team.
4. Stay in the present moment instead of worrying about the future.
5. Give breathing exercises or meditation a try.
6. Monitor your finances to ease money-related stress.
7. Prioritize quality sleep.
8. Stay active daily—walk, bike, or stretch.
9. Treat yourself to simple pleasures like your favorite coffee or a good book.
10. Listen to your body and rest when needed.

Let’s embrace December with balance, joy, and a refreshed spirit. What will you try first?
